{Tutorial} Patriotic Trifle in a Jar

The Fourth of July is this Thursday – can you believe it?!  I’ll admit it, this holiday sorta snuck up on me this year, especially since we just returned from our beach vacation… ack!  Luckily, this fun patriotic dessert is not only delicious but it is incredibly easy to put together (and it’s kinda healthy too…)!

Ingredients:

085

  • Mason Jars (Love my Blue Vintage Collection Jars)
  • Angel Food cake (I got one from the grocery store bakery)
  • Vanilla Greek Yogurt
  • Strawberries and Blueberries

How to make your own Patriotic Trifle:

086

1.  Cut angel food cake into 1-inch cubes.

   087

2.  Layer 3-4 cubes of cake on the bottom of the jar.

088

3.  Add 2 heaping spoonfuls of yogurt.

089

4.  Top with sliced strawberries and blueberries.

5.  Repeat layers one more time (or until trifle reaches the top of the jar).  That’s it!  Keep jars chilled in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Simple, delicious, and a nod to the Red, White, and Blue… perfect for your patriotic celebration!

Do you have big plans for the Fourth of July?!

Slipcovering Furniture for the First Time

I have redone quite a bit of furniture over the past couple of years, but am a newbie when it comes to slipcovering furniture.  Yes, I made new slipcovers for the Paint-Dipped Camping Stools I refurbished last year, but since those were a simple rectangle with ties, I’m not really counting them.  I’m talking the real deal, custom-fit slipcovers here, made to wrap every curve and angle just so…

And with that, here I go.

012

I found a neat barrel chair at our local Habitat Restore last summer for a steal.  It’s old and not in the best shape and since it’s got that nice 70s pleather covering, I wasn’t sure that reupholstering would be the way to go.  Thus, I decided to venture into slipcovering.  This is the progress so far.  I’m using some white cotton twill that I had on hand to cover the front seat and seatback and hope to use a stained Shabby Chic tablecloth to cover the back of the chair and the trim.  The tablecloth has a nice crochet edge detail, so I’m hoping to be able to use it as the finished edge all the way around.

Ambitious, I know… but if all else fails, I figure I can always find more fabric, right?

I must’ve watched Miss Mustard Seed’s Slipcover series a million times before I attempted to do this.  There are other tutorials available as well; here are a few more I thought were good:

Progress has been painfully slow around here since my unexpected surgery last month, but I’m happy to report that I’m fully recovered and ready to get back to my project list.  First up is this chair… right after I get back from the beach, that is, since we’re heading out on our annual summer family beach trip next week.  I’m looking forward to some sand and sun – you can keep up with the fun if you follow me on Instagram!

So tell me… have you been brave enough to charter the waters of slipcovering?

DIY Father’s Day Beard Mug

Father’s Day is tomorrow, so if you are still in need of gift for dear old DAD, how about a DIY Beard Mug?

What You’ll Need:

001

  • A plain white mug (I found my “kit” at Hobby Lobby on clearance
  • Paint Markers (Be sure the package says it works on ceramic/porcelain)
  • Beard template (I found this clipart and simply held paper up to the screen and traced!)

To transfer the beard tracing to the mug, I placed the tracing face down and did a pencil rubbing on the opposite side of the paper.  This technique allowed a faint transfer of my original beard tracing to the mug surface.

002

Then, I took my fine-tip paint pen and followed the beard outline.  Allow the outline to dry and then fill in the area with a medium-tip paint pen.  Allow to dry and touch up as needed and that’s it!

Just in case you want to add a little something else to your mug… here’s the opposite side.  Mr. home.made. and I are avid watchers of Duck Dynasty and their Happy Happy Happy motto and, well, if the beard fits:

Using the same transfer technique, I added this Duck Dynasty spin for dads everywhere: Daddy Daddy Daddy!!

Happy Father’s Day to all of you dads out there!
